Too Little, Too Late: My True Blood Season 4 Wrap-Up

Alas, I have failed in bringing you a thorough blow-by-blow of this Season of True Blood, and I apologize to anyone who may, possibly have been following me.  But I won't moan any more about my writerly rut.  Let me just give you a short sharp recap of what we were left with, along with some interactive questions.
 TB wrap up 1
The Sookie Mystique
Domesticated puppy dog Eric thrilled and annoyed various viewers.  Where do you stand?
The threesomes the show has subliminately implied have not happened.  Should Sookie cross that naughty line?
TB wrap up 2
 The Fridge
Writer Gail Simone coined the "Women in Refrigerators" phenomenon, which partially involves a female character being viciously murdered and discarded in order to advance the male hero's plot and motivation and angst.  Has this happened to Lafayette in his own way?
And was Tara seemingly killed to provide angst and badass vengeancing for Sookie?  They have piled on the angst for Tara so thick, I fear we've lost the caustic ass-kicker I thought she was in Season One.  Perhaps it is time to RIP, Tara Thornton.  A shame, because Rutina Wesley is a beautiful woman and a trained dancer - in other words, quite a screen presence.
TB wrap up 3
The Witchery
I will miss Jesus and his dazzling Aztec witchery.
Lafayette seems to be a free ride for every spirit that just feels like entering him ... that hookah!  While this is in keeping with how the African diaspora syncretic religions work, Lafayette is going to need to put up a psychic sign for the spirits that says "Not your ho."  Otherwise, he's in trouble.
So too will I miss Marnie.  Oh, and I believe I've found the Wiccan outrage against True Blood that I was looking for:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/12/us-trueblood-witches-idUSTRE77B54Q20110812
What do you think?  Is it fair to use the term "Wicca" and "wiccan" when presenting a fictional show about people zapping you with laser bolts from their fingertips?  Do Wiccans own the concept of "witches" and "witchcraft"? (I say no to the latter).
TB Wrap Up 4
Unethical Sluts?
Chillerpop can be moved by romance - particularly Hoyt and Jessica when they were a sweet, bumbling couple infatuated with each other.  Alas, we find Jessica just wasn't cut out for monogamy.  So she chooses probably the best and worst person ever to explore with - sex addict and best friend of her heartbroken ex, Jason Stackhouse.  Someone get our vampiric sex bomb a copy of "The Ethical Slut", so she can finally enjoy nights without guilt at Fangtasia.
Jason seems to want to change when Hoyt identifies something "dead" within him.  Interesting....
TB Wrap Up 5
The V-Mon0logues
Exquisite and sarcastic Pam - has she exhausted every single rude euphemism for the female anatomy?  Do we find it bold and refreshing or a lack of imagination from the writers?
 TB Wrap Up 6
The Pearl of the South
My final question to you - "True Blood" is often described as "Southern Gothic" or "Southern Grotesque".  Is Maxine Fortenberry the Flannery O'Connor heart of the show?
That's it for this year's True Blood.  But as I've snarked and gone on and on, I found that the TB cast has enthusiastically participated in the It Gets Better project.  Watch their oftentimes very moving, honest, non-PR canned stories as they reach out to bullied kids.

Bravo!

"I liked you better when you were brain-damaged." Yeah, me too. I've never been able to warm up to the Eric character, probably because I'm part of the 1% of women who don't like bad boys. While Bill is hardly Mr. Spotless, he's got good instincts and he is trying, bless him, and as King of Louisiana he's no end of fun.

In all honesty, I care so little for Sookie that I find it easy to ignore her and her doings. She could probably be gone from the show for 6 mos before I noticed.

Tara, on the other hand, I have a troubled liking for -- there are things I really enjoy about this character but there are also things that make it very, very difficult to justify that enjoyment. I, for one, do not believe Tara is dead; Bill and Eric and their magic vamp blood are just too nearby and attuned to Sookie's distress. My fingers are crossed that Tara comes back in season 5 as the show's newest vampire and please let Bill be the maker.

I really don't have any opinion at all about the use of the terms "Wicca" and "Wiccan" -- Hollywood screws up everything else, so why not this too?

Completely indifferent to the Jason/Jessica/Hoyt soap opera, and never liked Pam. Which made it weird that I did like Nan, who was just another verison of Pam. Go figure.

Maxine Fortenberry reminds me way too much of my own Southern relatives for comfort. Tho I do find her oddly likeable. I'm not sure if this show can be said to have a heart, it's just too scattered and I like it that way.
I wept with laughter at the "Not your ho" bit.

As for the regular updates, it's hard to do so while juggling so much else in life. I do know that I've enjoyed your writing in these installments ... and am looking forward to your 31 Days of Halloween.
Seer - thanks for your input, particularly on Hoyt's mom. So she's more over the top than vampires, fairies and maenads?! Hah!

bookscats - looks like we share the same perspectives on TB regarding Sookie, Rutina and more. Thanks for the note!

VA - as always, thanks!
