Day 3: Favorite Classic Horror Movie

Day 3: You Want Your Mummy

This was a tough decision, essentially a tie between Dracula's Daughter (1936 ) and The Mummy ( 1932).  I've already written about Dracula's Daughter in this blog, so let's focus on Universal Films' monster masterpiece of Egyptology gone wrong.
I have said before that the Universal Classics are visually rich.  They're comforting and glamorous.  They're the horror movies you can curl up to during a thunderstorm.  At the risk of continuing to sound like a cantankerous old man (which I am), I'm sad that the SAW generation can't appreciate a classic like The Mummy.
 Why is The Mummy great?
1) Enigmatic, awesome horror icon Boris Karloff as the resurrected Pharaoh sorcerer, Imhotep.

 2) The nod to Lovecraftian xenophobia (that isn't awesome in itself, far from it, but it's an interesting set of dots for horror geeks to connect).

 3) Haunting, dreamlike eerie black and white visuals (see the above Youtube clip).

 4) A heroine verily shimmering in classic Hollywood glamor.

"Do you always have to open graves to find girls to fall in love with?"
5) Dare I say, a subversive conclusion?  Reincarnation, ancient Egyptian religion and female power saves the day.
Here is an excellent overview and history of the film.

Dammit, YouTube clip doesn't work...
The YT clip worked fine for me, and I really enjoyed the article on the film's backstory. I agree that the classic Universal horror films are visually stunning, and landmark productions in the genre ("Frankenstein" would be my favourite classic horror film ... or can "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" fit here?).

Gotta love that theatre display along with the many graphics featured in the link you provided.
Good choices Chiller and Various. Those two would come out on top for me.
