"NO SANCTUARY"
THE WALKING DEAD/SEASON 5 PREMIERE

DirectorGreg Nicotero
Writer Frank Darabont, Robert Kirkman
Notable Cast: Chad L. Coleman, Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Steven Yeun, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Chandler Riggs
Plot: Rick and the reunited group are locked in a train car waiting for imminent death by the hand of the people of Terminus. Meanwhile, Carol and Tyreese get closer and closer to the compound (source: imdb.com).
Commentary: A dazzling, action packed and nail-digging episode opened the fifth season of the apocalyptic sensation based on Robert Kirkman's graphic novel.  To keep it concise: we have some revolting torture porn, we learn the secret of the Terminus cannibal cult, we have some possible red herrings for cause and cure of the Walker virus, we have some dramatic character arcs - looking at Tyreese, who forever remains the lovely moral rock of the band of survivors we follow - we have the controversial Carol overpass Michonne as the show's resident Lady Badass, and much much more.
What We're Afraid Of: What we are afraid of here is ... NOT FLESH EATING ZOMBIES!
In fact, Carol got a whole herd to do her bidding in her one-woman quest to rescue her former comrades from the clutches of Terminus.  She walked among them, using an old trick from Season One, like she was one of the herd.
No, we're not afraid of zombies or viruses or nature/tech run amuck.  We're scared of people and what they will become in order to survive and thrive and feel secure.
The Terminus cult started out just as sane and benevolent as Rick's crew, and they devolved into odious cannibal killers because they were repeating a cycle of abuse.  And they had a sinister recruitment plan to test for the strong, those worthy to join them.
Tyreese in this episode had to set aside his ethics and his love for people to protect his charges.  That was tough to watch; I want men like Tyreese in the world, whether it breaks down or not.
Carol and Rick are both at peace with killing in the name of survival and to maintain their own brand of order and law.
Is this how medieval feudal systems established themselves after Rome's collapse?

Yep, it is the people you have to watch out for. What they will do to survive is scary.
people I can handle - even if it's to avoid them. they won't eat me. and I'm ready for those friggin machete wielding clowns. I so AM.

what gets me is those damned zombies that scare the crap out of me. I am a total wussie when it comes to zombies. total. it's ridiculous.
R&R... Never have understood how slow moving half dead zombie folk could ever present much of a threat, but hey everyone's privileged to their own suspension of disbelief. ;-)
Indeed, zanelle. And FM, sadly you'll find that "they (people) won't eat me" just wasn't the case here. I think survivors of a zombie apocalypse should make creative use of them. They could power generators or get rid of pests.
BTW: If you're interested in the absurdity of a real life horror story check this out:

jmac - there are fast-moving zombie movies - 28 Days Later and WWZ among them. That is a scarier problem.
Jmac - very true. We could living in our own real life bio-disaster horror movie!
What an opening episode. It contained so much, was so jam-packed, I'm still trying to process it all. Looks like all is forgiven with Carol, though she's upped her badassery quotient. I guess if you're going to be a badass, it matters who you're devoting your badassery to.
I cannot bring myself to jump on the zombie craze.
Wigs me.
Like everyone said.. it is not about the zombies in this show it is about survival and that is why I ordered a zombies hoodie.. so I too can survive
watch it a year late(netflix,no tv)decent survival trip, zombies are ancillary....
