(Spoilers below)
Last night, Season 2 of V ended with an orgy of matricide and patricide, attempted and actual!
Participating in a supremely ill-conceived plot by the Fifth Column, Visitor Princess Lisa fails to kill mom, all because mom convinces her she’s changed….no such luck, of course. Queen Mum Diana tries to stage a comeback in a diaphanous white gown, promising her subjects a true la-la land of peaceful coexistence and acceptance of human emotion. Alas, she meets her end and the end of her daughter’s lizardy tail…
From there, a whole bunch of stuff happens. A lot of main characters die, but I’m not putting much stock in that (should there be a third season) because Visitor technology seems to easily overcome that pesky death hurdle. Covers are blown. A Visitor queen hatches (and it is groan-inducingly similar to the Alien). Lisa is moved into her grandma’s swampy quarters. And finally, Ryan’s hybrid daughter gives humanity a good dose of the telepathic Bliss crack that Anna regularly deals out to her own people.
That last bit, a creepy hybrid girl pulling out a psi whammy, was one of three pointed nods to the 1980’s V series. The second one was the Fifth Column “kidnappers” using a voice distortion very similar to the reverberation of the Visitor voices in the original.
And the third?
MARC. MOTHERF****G. SINGER!
Mike Donovan!
The Goddamned BEASTMASTER!
He’s called Lars Tremont or something like that, and he’s heading a superspecial uber-resistance enclave of some sort called the Ares Project. But what this really means is: humanity is SAVED!
Hopefully a new season will abandon the nonsense pseudo-mysticism about the human soul, and give us a more concise and simple concept around the Visitor’s master plan. This season finale is a good vehicle to clean house and go in a new direction. But we don’t know yet whether the show will return.
In the meantime, enjoy a bit of snakefight camp by way of the weekly V TV series (different from the two special miniseries and not recommended). Jane Badler vs. June Chadwick:
And enjoy the Scissor Sisters performing “Take Your Mama Out”:
