October 7th - Stigmata Bleed Continuously

RATE: 2 Flag
1988's "Night of the Demons" might not be a bright shining jewel in the horror cinema genre; at best, it's a classic party scary flick, the kind you have running at a Halloween party while everyone talks and mingles and gets distracted by other things, and then yells boisterously as people get killed, only to go back to flirting, drinking, snacking, etc.
Yet it has one notable grand moment of Gothic artistry.  Watch the clip below.
Despite the soon-to-be-dead chowderheads in presence and the tacky start, there is a bizarre majesty to the character of Angela performing an erotic dance to the tune of Bauhaus 's "Stigmata Martyr."
But then, the song itself is a beautiful cacophony of sharp bass lines, insect gibberish and incantatory poetry by Gothfather Peter Murphy, Bauhaus's lead singer.  Murphy himself is slightly less fascinating to watch in this youtube video, with some moves cribbed from Iggy:
Speaking of: "Stigmata" was also a 1999 spiritual thriller with Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne , a film with the potential to be great were it not for the annoying introduction of an overwrought Catholic secret society plot.  Possession by a Saint can be every bit as harrowing as that of a demon.  And speaking of Gabriel Byrne, that year he starred in the bombastically stupid "End of Days" as no less than the Big Bad Devil himself.  Strange little year for Mr. Byrne ....

Rated for the awesomeness that is Bauhaus!
Thanks much, MM II! I wonder if anyone has ever come close to toppling Bauhaus as the Kings of Goth?
I love how the dude just sits there and watches. I wasn't familiar with this flick. Crazy scene!
Great Gothic Horror post!
Thanks Susie! Full disclosure: I haven't gotten through the whole thing myself. To quote another Bauhaus song: "She's in Parties" ;-)
Yep, Peter Murphy is really trying on his inner-Iggy in that vid. He also may have borrowed some of Angela's moves too.
