Day 5: Favorite Horror Remake
30 Day Horror Movie Challenge
Oct. 5: Remake Redux
And the answer is.....
NONE. Zip. Zilch. I despise remakes. They reek of putrid franchise-squeezing cash grabs. They are devoid of any sort of originality. Ptah! Ptah!
But of course, I'm lying. The title of "Favorite Horror Remake" goes to Fright Night , which I have covered here in this post. It was a smart remake of its original.
A while back I covered the attempted A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. While I reported that I liked it, in retrospect I'm unsure. But it's strictly my problem; the Elm Street franchise is known for a certain sense of gory humor and campy wit. There was none in this remake; it eschewed the hormonal sexuality present in 80's horror films (for which the characters would get punished) for a dour torture-porn vibe.
Then again, why shouldn't these remakers take it in a different direction? I speak now of Rob Zombie's much maligned Halloween and Halloween II remakes. I think Rob Zombie is a great horror creator who's unafraid to do things his way. His Halloween remakes didn't do it for me because again, for me Halloween's brand is the invasion of slow moving evil in quiet, normal sleepy suburbia. The remakes are basically stark, ugly, white-trash nightmares. If its protagonists aren't killed by Michael Myers they'll die of a meth overdose for sure. They offer a tragic past for its killer where none is needed. Still the visual style and use of music is great, and Halloween II features a terrific phantasmagoric fantasy sequence that sets the film apart despite its flaws. I can't find it on youtube.
