Day 2: The Last Horror Movie You Saw in a Theater
30 Day Horror Movie Challenge
Oct. 2nd: Of Rude House Guests, Painful Family Reunions, and State-of-the-Art Blenders!
I last saw You're Next in
a theater. It is brought to you by some of the dandy upstarts involved
in the V/H/S franchise. Plot summary courtesy of imdb. (IMAGE AT THE
END OF THIS POST HAS A SLIGHT SPOILER FOR THE FILM)
When
the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary
getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of
victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.
I’ve found among people I informally survey that The Strangers
is increasingly name-checked as the most frightening film they’ve
ever seen. The ‘Home Invasion’ subgenre hits a specific nerve of fear. The most effective horror films should make you afraid of your own home, and The Strangers does this very well.
However, You’re Next,
also within the Home Invasion genre, contains enough camp and comedy to
calm your nerves while delivering shocks. It’s entertaining enough, if no masterpiece. It has
a downer pseudo-Hitchcockian finish and utterly creepy animal masked
killers. It decries family reunions while extolling the virtues of being
raised a survivalist. I'll be surprised if gun toting paranoid
end-of-the-world militias don't take this film to heart. It also (Spoiler) features one of the toughest blenders on the market:
For those of you on a paleo diet kick, with this baby you could make a human bone and brain smoothie.
