TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D
Released: 2013
Director: John Luessenhop
Writer: Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan, Kirsten Elms, Stephen Susco, Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan, Kim Henkel, Tobe Hooper
Notable Cast: Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood
Plot: It starts with a derivative shootout at the site of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, along with some flashbacks from the film (not even the remake!). Then, we cut to a hot young twentysomething who receives an inheritance from a mysterious relative: a sweet little mansion. Hot twentysomething brings her hot horny friends. Hot horny horror wackiness ensues.
Commentary: I found Texas Chainsaw 3D mostly groan-worthy and as I say above, derivative, formulaic and unspectacular, particularly when the original TCM is so rich in meaning.
The movie ended on a slightly interesting note - relevant to gender studies or feminist analysis, perhaps - but that makes no difference in the long run. It just sucks.
Did you know Scott Eastwood is Clint's son? This is the most notable thing on which I can comment.
What We're Afraid Of: It didn't beg much examination until the last act. The anxieties here may be root rust, corrupt law enforcement, and women taking the reins of power, as [SPOILER!] in the end, the Final Girl finds common cause and more with Leatherface, to the point where she becomes his caretaker/handler. Hostel II shares a similar element of the Final Girl taking control of the horror to her advantage.
Perhaps there's economic anxieties at play, too, with a grand inheritance and the general sheen of reality show fuckability. This is inexplicable when you take the original TCM's context, but there it is (and may be what I was trying to work out in my last Noir Nun story).
Meh. Next.

"Hot horny horror wackiness" ... hmmm ... could HHHW be a sub-genre of its own? Or perhaps it is already.
If you’re a fan of Alexandra Daddario, you’ll at least appreciate her attempts to hold the film together. 3D did not work:)
Wow. What happened to
"if they make it 3-D, they must really have faith in it?" I can think of
little worse than 3-D bad Horror...
It seems I've
identified a new cultural phenomenon! HHHW - VA and Jmac, nah, not
really. There's been HHHW in horror since Carmilla was first
published....
Linda - I wasn't familiar with Alexandria Daddario (and you're right, she deserves more respect than "hot chick"). And she did a fine job with what she was given. Do you have any other of her movies to recommend?
KC - 3D & Faith? Egh, please. Most 3D-ized stuff sucks. I personally can't stand it - it gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. But it's now a business model for theatrical releases, because with online piracy it's tough to make money.

I have a pair of 3D
glasses that came with an album by "The Cramps" that I bought during my
college days. October is a good month to annoy your neighbors and play
"Human Fly" really loud.

I think I see what you
are saying! Women gaining the reins of power by accessing the homicidal
Animus within themselves! Interesting!
