October 28 - A Trick on the Children....
A few posts ago I wrote of my inexplicable love for Exorcist II: The Heretic. Now I find myself once again, facepalming in deep shame, expressing my love for another awful horror movie: Halloween III: Season of the Witch (let's use H3 for shorthand).
H3's infamy lies not only in its badness, but in its being the only film in the Halloween franchise not to feature Michael Myers, the knife happy asylum escapee who has become ubiquitous in modern horror cinema. This is the reason you should love this film. Michael Myers is tired and played out. No one will ever, EVER capture the spare, chilling blend of music and tension that John Carpenter did in his legendary first film - and that includes Rob Zombie. In fact, Carpenter wanted the franchise to continue as different, unconnected tales centered around Halloween, which would have been awesome and is the reason for H3. Alas, lack of imagination and assured revenue trumps risk and creativity.
And creative H3 is, as it involves a nonsensical plot about an evil druid warlock businessman from Ireland who wants to kill lots of kids on Halloween night, not for profits, not for power, but just because! "A trick on the children," the druid CEO states. Again I'm drawn back to the early 80's and my cultural obsession, the satanic panic (more on this in my Halloween day post). This was the era when devil-worshippers were sacrificing babies and putting razor blades in Halloween candy, right? (Wrong, in case you're not aware - not one shred of evidence supported those claims). I love that this film deals with that in its own slaphappy and loony way. With masks and microchips made from pieces of Stonehenge, no less! Oh, and you have goopy killer robots with power drills, too.
As I said, it might be a bad movie but I enjoy its highly original madness. I challenge Hollywood to do a sequel or remake of it!
I'd also like to take the opportunity to mention fellow horror blogger Chutube, who is hosting his own terrific Countdown to Halloween series. Follow him on Twitter or catch his blog and video channel, and watch the hilarious '80's Dan' clip about H3.

I've never seen H3, but
it sounds like a hoot. Ever seen "Motel Hell"? It's a campy flick
made in 1980, really twisted. What about "Basket Case"?
