30 Day Horror Movie Challenge

Day 8: Vive la Difference

I'm willing to bet that J-horror will feature prominently among those doing this silly challenge.  My pick for this category is Honogurai mizu no soko kara, better known as Dark Water in the U.S.  It's an eerie, beautifully filmed and moving ghost story about a divorced Japanese woman and her daughter.  It's as much about ghosts as it is about the mother's lonely struggle to deal with her familial situation.  I have not seen the 2002 remake with Jennifer Connelly, so I don't know how it stacks up.

Did you think sophisticated continental Europe could never have a problem with psycho inbred hillbilly killers?  Think again!  Watch Calvaire (Belgium), a whole heaping  serving of jaw-dropping "what the fuck."

high tens

Also of note is the revoltingly sadistic High Tension (Haute Tension, France) with an interesting (if sometimes overused in horror) twist.

"... a whole heaping serving of jaw-dropping "what the fuck."" And with that line, you've sold me on it.
