The March Phantasmagorical, 2012
I can't believe it's the end of March. Three more months will mark a full year in the City of Briney Body of Water! Time sucks, and more often than not I'm stuck in mythical melancholy over a past I never even had. Blah. On with the phantasmagorical....
When Irish Eyes Are Bleeding. I'm not talking about any victim of the evil movie Leprechaun, I'm talking about my own eyes - except I'm not Irish (but am a wannabe).
Can you call yourself a victim of the Leprechaun if you willingly submit yourself to his movies? Probably not.
My cousin from another mother, Mr. ES and I, decided that it would be a - good - idea to take in the first four films in the Leprechaun franchise to celebrate St Patty's.
The first of the franchise is notable only for young and lovely Jennifer Aniston, free of the stresses of Friends and Brangelina, clad in some 80'sness...in the early 90's. Leprechaun 2 had a fantastically sophomoric motorboating rotating blade death. And I mean motorboating. And Leprechaun 3 shows that offensive, stereotypical Irishness is a communicable disease - a bite from a Leprechaun turns you into a potato-craving WereMick.
And remember that melancholy I mentioned? 2 of the 3 had that cheesy straight to video 90's production value - with earnest young protagonists trying to make it in a sunny, shiny palmy Skinemax style LA or Vegas straight out of a Shannon Tweed film.
Like when you're 23 and you just move to a new city and it's all the magic of possibility right before you and you're pretty sure you know who you are - until you don't...and I was able to feel that from watching two goddamn Leprechaun franchise movies.
Did I mention I was melancholy?
April theatrical releases of note:
- ATM - stuck in an ATM, with a killer! Looks forgettable
- Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope - Morgan Spurlock delves into geekery - I wonder what he'll find that's socially relevant?
- Cabin in the Woods - from Buffy auteur Joss Whedon, I am curious (and more on Whedon later this month from me)
- The Moth Diaries - this seems to involve vampires at an all-girl boarding school, which could be someone's pervy fantasy just like Hammer Film's Lust for a Vampire or it could be another fangy teen drama.
OSers dark delvings: late in February, KC Redding-Gonzalez debuted a blog about the process, joy and tribulations of writing horror stories which is interesting as I daydream of being some kind of creator but do nothing about it. Did I mention I was melancholy? Ray Tomczak weighs in on DC Comics and its decision to wring sour milk out of Watchmen.

ChillerPop - I saw
Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope at True/False earlier this month. I
really, really enjoyed it. He follows about 6 different people around
and they are all the Con for different reasons. It is AWESOME! So, go
see it, you won't have to suffer.
After that, I pick Cabin in the Woods. Joss Whedon is wonderful, but I would appreciate it if you would guinea pig it first. :)

Done and done, Muse!
It'll be a big season for Whedon, with this, and Avengers, and some
recent controversy on his helmed Buffy Season 9 continuation in comic
book form (which I'll do a post on). Thanks for stopping by!
I am curious about
Cabin the Woods too. Report back if you see it, Chiller. My husband and
I don't go to the movies anymore--wait for stuff to come on cable.
I'm sorry to hear that
you're melancholy. If it's any consolation, your witty, humorous
writing had me chuckling out loud as per usual. I particularly liked "

palmy Skinemax style LA or Vegas straight out of a Shannon Tweed film."
As for the movie I'd most like you to "suffer through," my vote goes to ATM, if only because it sounds like the most absolutely ludicrous of the four ... and I'm often have a soft spot for "ludicrous."

VA, as it stands it
looks like I won't get to the Halle Berry shark whisperer movie. And
how do you get more ludicrous than that? Oh yeah, Leprechaun 3....and
thank you for getting and understanding Shannon Tweed's LA!
Thanks for the
publicity and vote of confidence, my fine Chilly writer-in-arms...I love
reading your posts and seeing what is about to be unleashed on the
public...But by the way, you are writing when you do this you know. It
might not be what you want of it yet, but the Muse works in mysterious
ways. Give the Old Girl time. And bribes. I find bribes work really
well...
