Synopsis for "She Creature" from imdb.com:
Two carnies (Sewell and Gugino) abduct a mermaid in Ireland, circa 1900, and decide to transport her to America. As their ship loses its way and heads towards the mythical Forbidden Islands, the mermaid begins to display its deadly side.
Horror film-makers are ever on a quest for the next hot monster/villain/creature. They could rehash vampires, of course, but you have to politely clap for the effort-no matter how unsuccessful-to make a horror movie out of a snowman, Santa Claus, stuffed animals, the Tooth Fairy…
Or mermaids. They too have gotten their turn.
Watch She Creature
, a suprisingly engaging straight-to-cable cheapie which has registered acclaim from horror fans due to period-piece atmosphere. In fact, Hammer Films is often referenced in regard to this movie. I enjoyed the story and the characters; the cast is also pretty interesting: Carla Gugino, Rufus Sewell and Gil Bellows among them.
And yes, turning a mermaid into a frightening, eerie homicidal creature makes sense. Vampires are often sex and death in one, and a mermaid can be too. We forget that killing men was what a Siren was supposed to do. Not unexpectedly, there exists plenty of erotic tension between the mermaid and Carla Gugino’s character, and it plays out in a bizarre ending reminiscent of “Alien” – this could very well be “Alien on a Schooner.”
The film also flirts with Lovecraftian themes, which is brilliant. That man hated sea-life with a passion; mermaids no doubt played a big part in his nightmares (you also have the great 2001 Lovecraft adaptation “Dagon” for this).
