Is That Legal in Mississippi? (True Blood - S3: Ep3)

ep 3
Apologies, readers, I'm terrible at formal recaps, plot expositions, and the like. I'm just going to post train of thought-style.  Also, there will be SPOILERS for episode 3 below, so please beware.
We'll break this down by character threads.
Bill.It was an admittedly jaw dropping and tasteless episode finale we were treated to tonight.  My fiancee brought up an interesting point regarding Lorena, and violence towards women in these supernatural shows.  She brought it up when Lorena was flambeed by Bill, and then, at the end of the episode, Bill -- well, it's almost like he responded to Linda Blair's filthiest come-ons in "The Exorcist."  Or as if he's always had a fetish for the women in "Death Becomes Her."
And then we discussed the physical battery that "superwomen" are subjected to in supernatural fiction- what's misogynistic? What's equitable? What's the context? When a female character is supernaturally gifted with great strength, is it okay? etc etc.  And that's not even getting into issues of consent and kinky masochistic sexuality...
There was also Bill's Anne Rice-y melodrama flashback to the civil war era.  I guess it was poignant, but these issues of mortal family tragedy in vampire fiction have been incessantly rehashed under the pen of The Queen of the Damned herself, Ms. Rice.
Let's see how this all plays out, and whether Sookie's pure, tender heart can take it!
Oh Sookie.Speaking of...Sookie 3, Bella 2! Or, if you count Snoop Dogg, is Sookie at 4? Yes, the queen of wish fulfillment now has another supernatural hunk to vibe with.  He's not fawning all over her - yet.  "She ain't that blonde," so we had the pleasure of her being strong, taking initiative and vamping it up (the human kind of "vamping") at a werewolf bar in search of her man!
Tara.More kink tonight (but then, the show's pretty rife with it) - this time from Tara, who ended up having an earthshattering quickie with the mysterious vampire extortionist Franklin.  This was, of course, after last week's episode where Tara beat the living snot out of some foul racist rednecks.  And then, during coitus with Franklin, Tara's eyes went white, and Franklin said something to the effect of "you connected with The Void."
Violence.  Sexual abandon.  A quasi-mystic experience.  Will Tara become Maryann's heir?
She does seem like she's on the way to healing though.  I'm looking forward to a more positive state for her.  The funeral for Eggs and Sookie's support was a nice touch.  I for one am dissapointed that her witty, caustic "tell it like it is" anger is turning into something much darker and less wickedly joyful for the viewer.
Sam.
Sorry fans.  I love the side plots, the slow build, the character moments that may go nowhere.  I can't squeal endlessly about Eric and Bill and Sookie.  I like this plot with Sam's white trash birth family of origin, and I wanna see where it goes - even if it goes nowhere. It adds layers to the show and I like it.  Sam's loneliness and alienation parallels Tara in a lot of ways and it makes sense for Sam and Tara to find their way back to each other....
Even More Kink. The Swedish-American vampire community in Louisiana now has a kinky lesbian S&M poster girl in Pam.  The Estonian community is very happy with this.  In their more minor way, so too is the classy, mannered  flamboyant vampire court of Mississippi
Lafayette. To the Lafayette-Mobile, Robin! Eric gives his best employee a sweet dayglo-yellow ride.  And tempts him with riches to continue his drug dealing activities.
Is Eric Northman becoming a blacksploitation villain?
Jessica.
And I end this post with nothing but praise for lovely, awkward Jessica and the wonderful gruesome grand guignol of her vampire awakening and her tumultuous romance with Hoyt.  Now this is a vampire romance I can get behind!

Nice work Chiller--I too find it difficult to put together a formal synopsis. For one thing, they're tricky to write without boring your reader to death (this happened, then that happened, etc.). As I mentioned in my post, Julie Waters is a master at this, and I do enjoy her work, but that style never worked for me either.

I agree with you about Jessica. She is radiant and perfectlly cast as the resident, baby vamp; the perfect window into the growth process of a vampire. Tara and Lafayette haven't done anything particularly interesting as yet, but I have hope for the future. Try as I might, I just can't get interested in Sam...something about the actor/character that is just less appealing than the others for me. Pam is getting more fiendishly sexy by the minute. I'd like to see more of her.
