First of all, thanks to all the folks that commented on my awful pictures!
Today's post comes a little bit late and very rushed. The news feed on my smart phone was full of news of the breakup of Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. They had been married for 27 years. I have to say I'm shocked at how much attention it's getting from the Kardashian-obsessed entertainment media.
I developed a strong Sonic Youth obsession at the end of my college freshman year that continues to this day. They're radical and experimental and not to everyone's taste, but as some music guide of long-ago stated (Trouser Press Record Guide?), they make "rough, chilling beauty."
People are lamenting the end of what seemed to be a solid marriage and artistic partnership, and are musing about the future of Sonic Youth. I don't necessarily see this as a death knell for the band...John Doe and Exene Cervenka kept X going long after their divorce...in any event, we'll see. Both are happy and prolific with side projects for a long while now - no band lasts forever...
From their second full length album, "Bad Moon Rising," (and yes that was actually a nod to Credence Clearwater Revival) you would get the impression that Sonic Youth was some kind of goth horror-rock band. They're not, but they did make this eerie American Gothic record with songs about Halloween, Satan and the Manson Family. This track, "Hallowe'en" is a creepy spare romp featuring Kim Gordon's breathy vocals, a song where you can imagine something slowly crunching fall leaves right behind you, or where Puritan girls wait for you to turn the corner before convulsing into fits....
